Any senior leader or teacher in mainstream or special education knows the constant challenges – improving SATs, GCSE English or A Level results – as well as newer priorities like increasing pupil enjoyment of learning, to improve mental health.

Bookplay approaches merge understanding with enjoyment – for teacher and pupil alike. Pupils buzz with excitement, deeply engaged in plot, character, themes and language, and with the skill and vocabulary for quality responses. • Who's behind Bookplay

Bookplay was developed by Kat Fletcher and Maria Evans, experienced teachers who fully understand the daily pressures schools face. We first met in 2016 and instantly found a shared passion for teacher training. Our working relationship blossomed through the design and implementation of high-profile courses for other organisations, where we realised our values, expertise and personalities were perfectly matched. We founded Bookplay Education to address a shortage of high quality CPD for teachers wanting to adopt instantly usable and successful approaches into a wide range of literature. We’re on a mission to make books, plays and poetry come alive.

As a freelancer, my clients have included Arts Council, England, the National Theatre, Culture, Creativity and Education, the Qualification and Curriculum Authority, and the Department for Education. Key qualifications, fellowships and training include:

    • PhD in Arts Education, University of Warwick
    • PGCE: Drama and English (Distinction), University of Leeds

Most recently I have been developing and delivering a range of online training courses which I now deliver alongside in-person days and courses.

I have spent the last 18 years working as a theatre practitioner, director and educator, most recently with the Royal Shakespeare Company, leading work for teachers and young people. I have worked with organisations including the National Theatre, International School Theatre Association and the British Council to develop education programmes across the globe. I have coordinated theatre and literature festivals in America, Africa, China, Europe and the UK, bringing together thousands of artists, young people and teachers. Prior to this I managed educational initiatives at Open Minds Theatre Company, including producing the internationally recognised Rotherham Shakespeare Festival.

My research interests have focused on work within SEND settings. Most recently I have focused on Theory Of Mind and how its development could aid deaf and hearing impaired students to access Shakespeare and other complex narratives. Over the last five years I have delivered CPDL for teachers in a range of international contexts.
